Were they ever flown (possibly after the war) as a competition to see which was better?
Which one would you prefer to have flown in?
This is a real competition between apples and oranges. The B-17 was designed for high altitude, "precision", daylight bombing. They flew in tight formations and used their defensive armament to fight their way through to the target. Even so, it was only the addition of escort fighters such as the P-38 and P-51 and to a lesser degree the P-47, all with drop tanks that made deep penetration bombing possible. The B-17 had a higher ceiling, better protection and better ability to take damage.
The Halifax and the Lancaster were designed for night time area bombing in a bomber stream. The did not fly the tight formations and did not have near the defensive armament. They had a lower service ceiling but both carried a much heavier bombload than the B-17.
The B-17 had a better chance of being on target, but the Halifax and Lancaster packed a much greater wallop when they were on target.
Since the night fighters could often be as effective as the day fighters, I like to see my enemy when he was attacking me. Also the flak is not as effective higher up. Therefore, in addition I am also an American, I prefer the B-17. Both the night raids and the day raids sometimes suffered severe losses when the Luftwaffe fighters and flak were at their best in defending against the air raids.
